Therapy for eating disorders
I work predominately work with Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder.
Bulimia is often characterised by periods of bingeing and purging. They feel very distressed during this cycle and can often take laxatives or over-exercise to compensate for their binges. They place a lot of emphasis on their weight and shape and often believe they are bigger than what they are.
Binge Eating Disorder is often characterised by eating large quantities in a relatively short space of time. People experience binges as "trance" like eating. Even though they might want to stop they can't. This is very distressing and leaves the person feeling shame and self-loathing.
Bulimia and Binge Eaters usually have their binges in private due to the shame attached to these very distressing disorders. Both eating disorders can have positive outcomes by learning how to emotionally regulate themselves and making different lifestyle choices.
